The SLE Phase 1 assignment consists of a written statement of intent, documenting the organization(s) you have chosen, the number of hours you have worked (at least one hours for Phase 1), your plan for completing the required six hours of service for the quarter, and a research proposal that corresponds with your service learning activity(ies). You can complete all six hours of service with one organization, or you can mix and match two or more service opportunities.

Your statement of intent should contain the following:

Briefly describe your experience and ideas for how your project will develop through the quarter, and explain how you think it relates to course material. You should also explain why you have chosen this particular opportunity(ies), in terms of your own identity, history, and interests.
Present your research proposal, describing the broad issue/topic that you will address, explaining how your research relates to your service learning activity(ies), and how it relates to course themes. Clearly identify one key source you intend to use with an annotated citation, and explain how it will contribute to your analysis.
Provide an Annotated Citation for one source. An annotated citation contains descriptive or evaluative comments on the source you are working with in your research. In about 150 words, compose an evaluative paragraph informing the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the source cited.
You will be required to have three sources for your Phase 2 Final SLE Research Project.
The types of sources that are most appropriate will depend on the nature of your chosen topic.

Choosing a topic:

A good place to begin is to ask yourself a series of questions:

What do I want to study?
Why is the research topic important?
How does my research topic connect with my service?
How is it significant within the subject areas covered in my class?
What problems will it address or potentially help solve?
What exactly should I plan to do, and can I get it done in the time available?
