Step One- Identify a place or issue where you see a connection between the history we’re studying and the history being made today. In other words, pick something you think is really cool, significant, or interesting!

Identify a region or issue in the contemporary world and connect it with the global historical experience as reflected in the module Another way to think of it is to compare a current event (individual, place) with its historical counterpart. Clearly identify and evaluate the source for your current event. Cite both your historical and contemporary information using MLA.

Review all the material in this module.
Explore current events by looking at Associated Press, NPR, BBC, the Christian Science Monitor, Economist, ProPublica, New York Times or more locally, the Sacramento Bee or San Francisco Chronicle. Select from the list of sources above. If you are interested in using another source, I only ask that you run it by me first. Please keep it current – within the last twelve months or so. Please avoid “opinion” articles. You can also use Google Scholar and/or the library databases to identify a scholarly article. If you use sources other than those listed above you will lose significant points. Please only choose one contemporary article.
In your writing, carefully present and organize your ideas, think in terms of 3 paragraphs, about 300 words total for the paper, 12-point Times New Roman font double-spaced. It’s very important that you cite your contemporary evidence as well as your historical evidence using MLA.
Identify a current news article (within 12 months) or scholarly journal article (within 10 years) that adds to your understanding of theme you are exploring. You must include the article in works cited form including the full URL at the bottom of your paper.

Example of the formatting for the article, you must follow this formatting:

Newspaper Article:

Author(s). “Title of Article.” Title of Newspaper, Date Month Year.

Krugman, Andrew. “Fear and Loathing in Sydney.” New York Times, 21 May 2007.

Scholarly Journal:

Author(s). “Title of Article.” Title of Journal, Volume, Issue, Year, pages.

Bagchi, Alaknanda. “Conflicting Nationalisms: The Voice of the Subaltern in Mahasweta Devi’s.” Tulsa Studies in Women’s Literature, vol. 15, no. 1, 1996, pp. 41-50.

Clearly identify the connection you see between the article and the historical problem you are exploring.
