Please answerONE of the following questions in relation to Stephen King’s novel The Shining: 1: We have been looking at Jack as a failed hero; however, it is possible to see him as a straight villain. Which interpretation do you prefer and why? 2. Dick Hallorann is a fairly easy character to forget, as he is absent throughout a substantial portion of the novel. Yet he does have a significant role. Of what does this role consist? Can you relate the part his race plays in the story to the idea of the buried past we have been discussing? 3. Wendy is one of the few relatively prominent female characters we will examine in this course. Many readers, especially those influenced by Stanley Kubrick’s film version of The Shining, view her as annoyingly passive; however, she can also be seen as the novel’s protagonist and one of its more subtle characters.
