Answer ONE of the questions below in a TWO to FOUR PAGE ESSAY (500 – 1000 words). (If you feel the need to write a longer essay, you are free to do so, but you will get no automatic extra credit for the length of your essay.) State the number of words at the end of your essay. It is a good idea to have a concise statement of your thesis, or at least the problems and themes you will be addressing, in the opening paragraph, and the ways in which you will set about analyzing the question. Be as specific as possible in the body of the paper, and avoid simply retelling the plot. Back up your argument with careful and apt reference to the text(s). You may assume that the reader of the essay has read the works or works your are discussing and has a basic knowledge of the plot and characters. You must have a title that indicates which question you have chosen (if a title is not supplied, or if you want to provide a more specific title to reflect the argument of your essay rather than use the title given). The title should set up expectations for the reader about the content of the essay.MAKE SURE YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION YOU HAVE CHOSEN – THE ESSAY’S CONTENT MUST BE A RESPONSE TO THE ISSUES IN THE TITLE! Basic rules for the essay: tell the reader what your argument is going to be, provide this argument, conclude by repeating why (in the light of the evidence you’ve provided) your argument is significant and convincing. HOWEVER: don’t forget that Dostoevsky’s works perhaps more than any other Russian writer often don’t provide “easy answers” to questions, and you should not be afraid to show the ambiguities that may be present in these works, the different layers of meaning, potential readings that may be in conflict, or even evasions or inconsistencies in the works. In such instances, make sure that you state clearly what the difficulties in interpreting these works are, and why these difficulties arise. This does not mean that you should not put forward a clear argument in favor of a particular viewpoint, but simply that it is not advisable to ignore major problems or pieces of evidence that could undermine the credibility of the case you are making.I recommend reading through all of the essay questions carefully, because many of them may suggest ways of approaching whichever essay you finally pick.
All assignments should be typed, double-spaced in 12-point font with 1-inch margins. On assignments longer than 1 page, please include page numbers.
