Week 2 Online Activity – Critique a Website
Due Tuesday by 12:30pm Points 10 Submitting a text entry box Available Sep 5 at 12am – Sep 10 at 12:30pm 6 days
This assignment is designed to help you be a critical consumer of human development-related information, particularly if that information is new or when it challenges your current beliefs and assumptions.
As noted in your textbook, research is a critical aspect of our understanding of human development. However, a challenge that students–and the general population–often face is how to discriminate between trustworthy information (usually based upon scholarly research) and not-so-trustworthy information (based upon opinion, personal experience, poorly conducted research, or a secondary or even tertiary interpretation of scholarly research).
Find a website that provides human development-related information or advice on a topic that is interesting to you. If you are unsure about topics to choose from, take a look at the Detailed Contents at the beginning of your textbook.
Respond to each of the following four questions in 1-2 sentences, numbering each response:
Describe the basic purpose or goal(s) of the website.
Describe how reliable/trustworthy you believe the site to be and how you came to that conclusion.
Are personal, political, or corporate beliefs influencing the information/advice provided on the site? How can you tell?
Would you feel comfortable recommending the website to a friend or family member? Why or why not?
